Chevron Award

On April 14, 2011, Chevron was recognized by the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Board of Education for investments in K-12 education in West Contra Costa County.

Chevron received an award at the WCCUSD Board of Education’s weekly board

meeting. Tony Thurmond, Board Member for WCCUSD Board of Education, said, “We are so thankful for Chevron’s long-time support of the West Contra Costa

Unified School District. True partnerships, like this, make it possible to continue improving the quality of education for our children in West County.”

Chevron partners with the WCCUSD as well as other nonprofit community partners to invest in the future of education for students in West County. Chevron continues to listen to our local communities and the City of Richmond on ways they can better contribute to improving the quality of life for Richmond and surrounding residents.

Some examples of this support include:

- Donating $60,000 to the WCCUSD through DonorsChoose.org, a nonprofit organization, to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) oriented classroom project requests submitted by public school teachers in West Contra Costa County.

- Fully sponsoring three WCCUSD math/science teachers to attend the Exploratorium Summer Teacher Institute and New Teacher Program, a 2 year comprehensive program that will begin in the fall of 2010. The institute focuses on physics, middle-high school general science, life science and mathematics and supports the content described in the National and California

- With $50,000 in funding from Chevron, and another $10,000 in annual support after implementation, Chevron is currently working with the WCCUSD on an implementation and integration plan for Project Lead-the-Way (PLTW) into their Engineering Academy Program at Richmond High School. PLTW’s goal is to increase the number, quality, and diversity of engineers graduating from our educational system.

- In the summer of 2010, Chevron will be funding the Chevron Mathematics Achievement Academy Program for the first time through a partnership with California State University East Bay and ACCLAIM (Alameda County Collaborative for Learning and Instruction in Mathematics) teachers and students can have opportunities to learning despite some of the challenges they are facing.

Chevron is the largest employer and taxpayer in Richmond with approximately 2,700 employees and 850 contractors. The company has invested over $3 million in the Richmond community over the last year and has long supported improving the quality of K-12 education in the area and helping to bring in Chevron Richmond Refinery General Manager, Mike Coyle, affirmed Chevron’s continued support of K-12 education in West Contra Costa County. “For more than 100 years Chevron has been a part of the Richmond community and we’ve been committed to supporting improvements in K-12 education,” said Coyle. “In 2010, Chevron continues its commitment to making an educational investment in the community.
