On
April 14, 2011, Chevron was recognized by the West Contra
Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Board of Education
for investments in K-12 education in West Contra Costa County.
Chevron received an award at the WCCUSD Board of Education’s
weekly board
meeting. Tony Thurmond, Board Member for WCCUSD Board of
Education, said, “We are so thankful for Chevron’s
long-time support of the West Contra Costa
Unified School District. True partnerships, like this,
make it possible to continue improving the quality of education
for our children in West County.”
Chevron partners with the WCCUSD as well as other nonprofit
community partners to invest in the future of education
for students in West County. Chevron continues to listen
to our local communities and the City of Richmond on ways
they can better contribute to improving the quality of life
for Richmond and surrounding residents.
Some examples of this support include:
- Donating $60,000 to the WCCUSD through DonorsChoose.org,
a nonprofit organization, to support science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) oriented classroom project
requests submitted by public school teachers in West Contra
Costa County.
- Fully sponsoring three WCCUSD math/science teachers to
attend the Exploratorium Summer Teacher Institute and New
Teacher Program, a 2 year comprehensive program that will
begin in the fall of 2010. The institute focuses on physics,
middle-high school general science, life science and mathematics
and supports the content described in the National and California
- With $50,000 in funding from Chevron, and another $10,000
in annual support after implementation, Chevron is currently
working with the WCCUSD on an implementation and integration
plan for Project Lead-the-Way (PLTW) into their Engineering
Academy Program at Richmond High School. PLTW’s goal
is to increase the number, quality, and diversity of engineers
graduating from our educational system.
- In the summer of 2010, Chevron will be funding the Chevron
Mathematics Achievement Academy Program for the first time
through a partnership with California State University East
Bay and ACCLAIM (Alameda County Collaborative for Learning
and Instruction in Mathematics) teachers and students can
have opportunities to learning despite some of the challenges
they are facing.
Chevron is the largest employer and taxpayer in Richmond
with approximately 2,700 employees and 850 contractors.
The company has invested over $3 million in the Richmond
community over the last year and has long supported improving
the quality of K-12 education in the area and helping to
bring in Chevron Richmond Refinery General Manager, Mike
Coyle, affirmed Chevron’s continued support of K-12
education in West Contra Costa County. “For more than
100 years Chevron has been a part of the Richmond community
and we’ve been committed to supporting improvements
in K-12 education,” said Coyle. “In 2010, Chevron
continues its commitment to making an educational investment
in the community.
