Richmond
NAACP HONORS COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS: The Richmond branch of the NAACP will hold its 26th annual Freedom Fund and Life Membership Banquet on Saturday. Western Region Director Jamal Watkins and New York University law professor Anthony Thompson will be the featured speakers.
Several individuals and businesses -- including Richmond Police Lt. Ron Berry and Chevron -- will be recognized for their work in the community.
The NAACP will present a lifetime achievement award to Henry LaRue Royal, who served as a Congressional Caseworker for U.S. Rep George Miller. Royal, who retired last month, was the lead plaintiff in a massive police brutality lawsuit in 1979 against the Richmond Police Department. The suit resulted in a federal district court decree ordering Richmond to make sweeping reforms to the department.
The banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium, 403 Civic Center Plaza. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 510-236-1166.
